We’ve had a busy month and look forward to sharing our news and events with you.

Spring Celebrations

For many faiths, Spring is a time for holy celebrations and feast days. Bay Gardens and Bayview Cemetery wish our friends in the surrounding communities health, happiness and prosperity as they celebrate their cultural and religious customs.

Easter – March brought an early Easter this year. For Christians who honour the death and Resurrection of Christ, we hope your Holy Week was a time for reflection, family and fellowship.

Baisakhi, also spelled Vaisakhi, is the festival which celebrates Sikh New Year and the founding of the Sikh community, known as the Khalsa, in 1699. It is celebrated on April 13th or 14th. It was originally a harvest festival in the Punjab before it became an important Sikh festival. Health and best wishes to our friends in the Sikh community.

Passover – This week-long period will begin on April 22nd this year and commemorates the freedom from slavery and exodus of the Israelites from Eqypt. The highlight of Passover is an important, solemn meal called the Seder, which is steep in custom and traditional foods, herbs and wine. Shalom Passover to our friends in the Jewish community.

Ridván – This Baha’i festival means paradise, and is named for the Garden of Ridván outside Baghdad, where Bahá'u'lláh stayed for twelve days after the Ottoman Empire exiled him from the city and before commencing his journey to Constantinople. It occurs in April this year. Like other Bahá'í holy days, there are few specific rules concerning the observance of Ridvan. It is usually observed with community gatherings for prayer and celebration on the three holy days. Most Bahá'í elections are held during Ridvan, a practice that began in the time of `Abdu'l-Bahá. Best wishes to our friends of the Baha’I faith.

Hindu New Year - The Hindu calendar New Year is being celebrated across the country starting on April 8th, marking the first day of spring season and New Year's Day of the traditional Hindu calendar based on the beginning of new moon. Known by various names, Chaitra Sukladi, Gudi Padava, Ugadi, Cheti Chand, Navreh and Sajibu Cheiraoba, this festival is celebrated in various ways using oil lamps and brightly coloured flowers. Best wishes for joy and prosperity to our friends in the Hindu community.

Orthodox Easter – Orthodox Christians commemorate Jesus' resurrection three days after his crucifixion and death. Orthodox Easter is the highest and holiest of holidays in the Christian Orthodox faith. Orthodox Easter follows the Julian calendar and must take place after the Jewish Passover. For these reasons, Orthodox Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday, after the first full moon, following the vernal equinox and always after Jewish Passover. It begins April 29th this year. Blessings to all our friends in the Christian Orthodox community.

Community Involvement & Events

Last month, staff members Lisa Palmer and Mandie Oram attended an anniversary fundraising event for The Stephen Lewis Foundation in honour of Grandmothers To Grandmothers. This association was formed in response to the emerging crisis faced by African grandmothers as they struggled to care for millions of children orphaned by AIDS. The Campaign aims to raise awareness, build solidarity and mobilize support in Canada for Africa’s grandmothers. We were proud to support this event.
